University of Passau, Germany - International Visiting Scholars Programme

Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Passau maintains an International Visiting Scholars Programme. This is intended to attract scholars from international universities and increase the international exposure of both the sending and the host universities.

Aims of the international visiting scholars programme

By playing hosts to visiting scholars, we give our students the chance to come into contact with new ideas and innovative approaches from abroad at an early stage of their university education. This may well motivate them to study abroad at some point in their university education. On the other hand, students who cannot or do not wish to go abroad for financial or other reasons are given the opportunity to find out first-hand about concepts discussed in international academic circles, without leaving their home university. For the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, courses taught by visiting scholars in their native language enrich our international and interdisciplinary study options, as our students are exposed to new academic perspectives and lines of enquiry. Furthermore, a programme such as this promotes international diversity among our teaching staff, enhancing the cosmopolitan flair on campus and providing academics at the University of Passau with excellent networking opportunities.

Requirements

Visiting scholars must stay for at least 14 days and give lectures in either German, English or the respective language forming the main subject matter of the inviting unit. If possible, the lecture or lectures should be offered as a compulsory elective to ensure easy integration into the normal teaching routine and to make them accessible to as many students as possible. These courses are primarily concerned with imparting academic expertise and fostering the development of skills and competences related to the relevant discipline; the courses should not, however, be mere language practice session. Co-finance under the DAAD's visiting scholars programme or from other sponsors (e.g. other subsidising programmes or sponsorships from businesses, as long as they do not exceed the DAAD subsidies) may be arranged.
